What does a golfer and cigar smoker who owns a tool and die operation do in his spare time? Design a tool that solves a problem. For Monty Craven, owner of Die-Rite Machine and Tool Corp. in Elkhart, IN that tool is a stainless steel divot tool.

Like the beginning of many great ideas, Monty had a problem, “where to put his cigar while he took his next swing of the golf club”. To solve this problem, he started fooling around with some ideas with a divot tool. “When I drew one with a circular top, it occurred to me that if I “dished” out the top, it would hold a cigar.”

He has since designed six different three pronged divot tools to hold cigars and one that holds a cigarette. What started out as a solution to his own problem has evolved into a market niche.
